  • Jack Grealish had a moment to forget during England's Euro qualifier match against Italy
  • The Man City star had an opportunity to make the score 3-0 but somehow failed to find the net
  • The 27-year-old, who played a peripheral role at the World Cup, lasted 69 minutes in Naples

Jack Grealish missed a glaring opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet during the opening round of Euro 2024 qualifiers.

England played the reigning champions, Italy at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Thursday evening, looking to put behind their World Cup disappointment behind them.

Italy, on the other hand, started the journey to defend their title after missing out on the World Cup altogether.

However, Declan Rice put the visitors ahead with a close-range finish despite early pressure from Roberto Mancini's side.

Harry Kane then added a second one from the penalty spot to atone for the one he missed in the World Cup quarter-final against France, as the Three Lions crashed out.

Grealish's missed chance

Grealish then had a moment to forget when he missed a chance to put England 3-0 up right before the break, with an open goal in front of him.

Kane magnificently did the donkey work to tee up the Manchester City star. With Gianluigi Donnarumma beaten and scampering to get back to position, all Grealish needed to do was to pick out his spot - only for him to shoot wide.

Italy threatened a second-half comeback with debutant, Mateo Retegui halving the deficit. However, Gareth Southgate's men held on for a first win over the Gli Azzurri since 2012 despite being reduced to 10 men after Luke Shaw's late red card.

Walker survives two yellow cards

Sports Brief also reported that despite Grealish's miss, nothing was more bizarre than Kyle Walker receiving two yellow cards and remaining on the pitch.

For those who were following the game on their television screens, the Man City star was thought to have received his first yellow card in the 53rd minute.

Walker was then shown another yellow card in the 71st minute for time-wasting but referee, Srdjan Jovanovic did not produce a red card for the Englishman.
