  • Manchester City fullback Benjamin Mendy has been cleared of seven out of nine charges of assault
  • The France international was moved to one of UK's maximum prisons a year ago
  • He faces retrial over two more charges which the jury ruled there were not enough clarifications for

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been cleared of seven of the nine charges of assault levied against him, but the matter is not over as there are two other cases which he would face retrial on.

The France international was arrested in August 2021 and has since been in detention as he was not granted bail. Manchester City did not terminate his contract which expires in June 2023, but stopped paying him a month after his arrest.

Internet reacts to Mendy's clearance

Social media erupted at the news he has been cleared of seven out of his nine charges

If Benjamin mendy is found not guilty , where will he start from , from a man city player to start searching for club

@Aadozo wrote:

I genuinely feel sorry for Benjamin Mendy. Those women seem to have lied that he rap*d them and tarnished his name and reputation. They have completely destroyed him and I really hope they will be jailed for wrongly accusing him. What a sad world we are living in.

@Ang3lR4t tweeted against the verdict:

Unfollowing anyone I see tweeting Pro Benjamin Mendy sh*t today not guilty don’t mean innocent. How can you value a lowlife footballer who don’t know you over women’s safety.

@AgueroRole tweeted:

Feel so sorry for Benjamin Mendy… had 19 months of his career ruined over false allegations…indeed women are the most dangerous creatures

Mendy moved to maximum prison

As Sports Brief earlier reported, Mendy was transferred to maximum prison, one of the toughest in the UK over concerns on his safety amid ongoing detention for assault.

The 28 year old was moved from Liverpool's HMP Altcourse prison to the Category A at Strangeways, which is believed to be better equipped for any potential safety risks.

He suffered a meltdown when he was moved in as he thought he would be moved to the VIP wing meant for celebrities.
