  • Yaya Toure's remarks about Manchester City's Champions League chances have sparked wild celebrations from Manchester City fans
  • City's near-miss in Europe's most prestigious interclub competition has been attributed to a curse inspired by Pep Guardiola's unfair treatment of Yaya Toure
  • Last season the Cityzens succumbed to a heartwrenching exit at the hands of eventual winners Real Madrid when they threw away a two-nil aggregate lead to lose 6-5 after extra time

Manchester City fans have taken to social media to celebrate the lifting of the supposed 'Champions League curse' placed on Pep Guardiola and the club by Yaya Toure.

Back in 2018, Dmitry Seluk, Yaya Toure's agent, stressed that Guardiola's decision to not count on his client as a starter in the midfielder's final season with City would invoke an African curse on the celebrated Spanish trainer, reports Marca.

Guardiola had won the title on two occasions during his time at Barcelona but has struggled to win the competition since he left the Catalan giants.

And following the club's heartbreaking semifinal loss to Real Madrid - conceding two late goals before losing on aggregate after extra time - Seluk's famous remarks resurfaced.

But it appears the player in question has lifted the supposed curse during this season's Champions League draw when the City legend participated in the process.

Assessing the chances of Man City ahead of this season's Champions League, Yaya Toure said:

"Every year they have a chance, and this year they're going to have a chance. They can get what they need. It's not going to be easy for them, but I wish them good luck."

Following Toure's comments about his former side, a section of the club's fanbase believe the ex-Ivorian international might have broken the yoke on Pep and the club.

@Priceless_Silva tweeted:

"Curse gone."

@TheCanceloEra added:

"He’s lifted the curse."

@karimmcfc followed suit:

"The curse garnnnn tears of joy."

An excited @_toheed_a joined the bandwagon:

"Yaya curse over."

But a more cautious user @gabeknowsball quizzed:

"Is he breaking the curse by wishing us luck?"

Yaya Toure-inspired curse strikes again as City fail in Champions League

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that on one of the most dramatic nights in Champions League football, Real Madrid came from behind to knock Manchester City out of the competition in what could be a boomerang.

Marca reports that Yaya Toure’s agent Dmitri Seluk had, in 2018, predicted that Spanish manager Pep Guardiola would not win the prestigious title again courtesy of ‘African Shamans’.

The manager had won the title twice during his time at Barcelona, but he has struggled to win the competition since he left the Catalan giants.
