  • Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola jokes that he asked Real Madrid for help as his side came from two goals down to beat Aston Villa and win the Premier League title
  • Real Madrid have been masters of comebacks this season with their Champions League semifinal turnaround against Manchester City being one of the most intriguing games in history
  • Guardiola’s side needed three goals against a determined Aston Villa side to defend their Premier League crown and beat their closest challengers Liverpool by a point

Pep Guardiola amusingly quipped that he asked Real Madrid for advice before his side completed an incredible turnaround against Aston Villa.

Manchester City were on the cusp of letting the Premier League title slip through their hands. Villa had taken a 2-0 lead to put City on the edge of losing the title to Liverpool.

But Ilkay Gundogan and Oleksandr Zinchenko sparked a comeback from the 76th minute. Guardiola saw the funny side of it and as Marca reports, he cheekily mentioned Real Madrid in his post-match press conference.

I called Real Madrid and they gave me good advice. No explanation in Madrid, no explanation today. It’s momentum.

The Spanish tactician was referring to the ridiculous comeback that Madrid did on his side in the Champions League semifinals. City were poised to book their ticket to the finals with only stoppage time left to play.

But Carlo Ancelotti’s second-half substitute Rodrygo Goes scored a quickfire brace to force the game into extra time. Karm Benzema drilled the last nail into City’s coffin as Guardiola’s charges bowed out in a heartbreaking fashion.

Guardiola drew comparisons from Real Madrid’s victory with how his side had to win the hard way. A draw or a loss for the Citizens could have handed Liverpool their second Premier League title in 30 years.

Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 but it wasn’t enough to win the title as they eventually finished a point behind City. It is the second time in four years that the Premier League race has been decided by a solitary point.

Oleksandr Zichenko dedicates the Premier League title to Ukrainians

Sports Brief had earlier reported how Oleksandr Zinchenko dedicated the Premier League title to the people of Ukraine due to the continued Russian invasion of his home country.

The Ukrainian international was full of emotion after helping his side pick up the prestigious title in a spectacular fashion.

Tears flowed freely from Zinchenko’s eyes as he wrapped the Premier League title with the flag of his country, paying tribute to victims of the war.
