Manchester City Identify Top Premier League Midfielder As Replacement for Outgoing Fernandinho

Manchester City are wasting no time in their effort to rebuild their squad ahead of the 2022/23 season, following the revelation, some top players are set to depart the club.

Brazilian midfielder, Fernandinho confirmed he is set to depart the Etihad Stadium in the summer, whilst Ilkay Gundogan has been given permission to also seek a move away by Man City.

According to a report via Daily Mail, the reigning Premier League champions have now turned their attention to Leeds United midfielder, Kalvin Phillips.

City, who has sent scouts to watch Phillips earlier in the season, hopes the 26-year-old will be the perfect replacement for Fernandinho.

The Etihad club are assumed to be front runners for the signature of Kalvin Phillips although they will face a stiff battle with other Premier League teams, including Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Raheem Sterling sent Man City a transfer message

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling has been advised to stay at Manchester City next season and not seek a move away from the reigning Premier League champions.

According to Manchester Evening News, former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman believes Sterling will most certainly remain at the Etihad Stadium if suitors, Arsenal fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Sterling has been heavily linked to the Gunners ahead of the summer transfer window as the 27-year-old tries to sort out his future under Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City gives permission for top midfielder to leave

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Manchester City has given their blessings for midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan to seek a new club ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 31-year-old German has seen his impact at the Etihad Stadium reduce significantly this season after starting 50% of City’s Premier League games from the bench.

Gundogan, whose current deal with the Premier League defending champions is set to expire in the summer of 2023, is seeking more playing opportunities and will most likely seek a move next season.
