  • İlkay Gündoğan scored against Burnley to record 34 goals in the English Premier League, the most by a German player
  • Gündoğan achieved 34 goals in the English Premier League in the six years that he has been with Manchester City
  • No other German player currently playing in the English Premier League is close to matching İlkay Gündoğan's record

Manchester City star, İlkay Gündoğan, has set a new Premier League record.

The City midfielder scored against Burnley to become the highest-scoring German in the English Premier League.

Gündoğan has now scored 34 goals in England’s top flight, surpassing former Arsenal star, Mesut Özil as the top-scoring German player in the history of the English Premier League, Goal.com reported.

Gündoğan, who has been with City since 2016, faces no real threat for the honour, as no one else in the top nine is currently an active footballer or plays in the Premier League.

Mesut Özil occupies the second spot with 33 goals, followed by former players, Jürgen Klinsmann and Uwe Rösler. Both players had scored 29 goals during their time in England.

Leroy Sane rounds off the top five with 25 goals.

Defender Robert Huth notched up 21 goals during his time to grab the sixth spot with Lukas Podolski occupying the seventh spot with 19 goals. Michael Ballack and André Schürrle occupy eighth and ninth with 17 goals each.

Pascal Groß rounds off the top ten, having scored 15 goals. Groß still plays in England’s top flight with Brighton and Hove Albion but is yet to find the back of the net this season.

Kevin de Bruyne and İlkay Gündoğan take Manchester City top of the Premier League, Burnley beaten once again

Manchester City went into the game knowing that a win would put them back on top of the English Premier League table, Sports Brief earlier reported.

Manchester City played like a side chasing the top spot as they took the lead in the fifth minute of the game. Kevin de Bruyne smashed the ball home from close range after he was found by Raheem Sterling.

The finish was by no means easy, but the Belgian made it look simple. City should have scored twice again in the next four minutes as Rodri didn’t make the most of both chances. Nick Pope saved one while Rodri volleyed the other just wide.
