Manchester City have threatened legal action against Chilean side Santiago City because of the striking similarities between the two club’s badges.
The Sun reports that City, through the club’s lawyers, have urged Santiago City to change their badge or risk a lawsuit.
In 2015, Manchester City conducted a poll with their fans where it was decided that the club’s crest would be altered as the majority of the fans wanted a rebrand of the badge.
The new badge was ultimately unveiled at the start of the 2016-17 campaign when Pep Guardiola first took charge of the club.
Reports further indicate that the City Football Group has ties in South America including countries like Uruguay and Bolivia, and plans are in place to expand their territory.
For this reason, the club is concerned that Santiago City’s badge could lead to the public believing the Chilean club was part of the stable of worldwide clubs.
“The design you are using cannot co-exist with Manchester City trademarks,” a letter from Manchester City lawyers to Santiago City said.
“Failure to comply with the foregoing may lead our client to take legal action against you however it is in the interest of all parties if it is resolved amicably.”
Santiago City’s reply
Interestingly enough, Santiago City issued a rejoinder to City’s request, with the club insisting they were not trying to copy the Premier League champions.
As quoted by The Sun, the reply said:
“This is a humble club that registered the name of Santiago City and in no case has alluded to – or hinted at – that it is part of any business group.
