  • Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile is inhabiting the nightmares of defenders and goalkeepers in 2021
  • The fiery-hot Namibian striker is one goal away from breaking a calendar-year record for the most strikes in the DStv Premiership
  • Football fans are backing him to break the record against Marumo Gallants, while others are worried about the lack of Mzansi's own successful sharpshooters

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile stands on the verge of history as 2021 winds down.

The Namibian hitman is one goal away from breaking the record for the most goals scored in a calendar year in the DStv Premiership. Since Premier Soccer League (PSL) began in 1996, Shalulile and the great Zimbabwean striker Wilfred Mugeyi are tied on 24 strikes in a year.

Shalulile was blunted by Amazulu in a shock 0-1 loss on Monday, but he will get another opportunity to go down in the record books on Thursday against Marumo Gallants. He has banged in an impressive 13 goals in 18 league matches, and 16 in 24 across all competitions.

Shalulile is currently ahead in the 2021/22 Leslely Manyathela Golden Boot race, streaking ahead of Royal AM's Victor Letsoalo who sits on nine goals this term.

Mzansi is convinced he'll break the record, but also questions the lack of South African goal scorers.

@JeleJele89 said:

"Praying for Shalulile to score a hat trick tonight!"

@SisingMelato5 wondered:

"Where are our South African strikers? Do we still have any in this country? The reasons behind Bafana Bafana non-participation are there for all of us to see. We're busy developing foreigners who are flourishing but we can't do the same with our own. Just my opinion."

@AJMkansi responded:

"It happens in the big leagues as well and its not a new thing. That's the reason big clubs buy the best players from all over the world, and since the Absa premiership is one of the biggest and richest leagues, you will continue seeing the best players from the continent & abroad."

@BoyTsetse joked:

"Nyaa wait! It's bad enough the league is over... at least let's let others compete for golden boot."
