  • Monnapule Saleng almost proved that lightning can strike the same place twice during the MTN8 competition
  • The Orlando Pirates midfielder caught out AmaZulu's goalkeeper in the final from a tight angle with a stunning free-kick
  • It was something of a flashback for Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Ronwen Williams, who almost fell victim to Pule's spot-kick mastery in the same manner

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had a sense of deja vu, as he watched Orlando Pirates midfielder Monnapule Saleng catch out AmaZulu goalie Veli Mothwa in the MTN8 final last weekend.

The only difference between that free kick in Durban and the one in Soweto, was that the latter did not go in. Beyond that, everything was a carbon copy of the other.

Williams, Bafana Bafana's number one, said to Sports Brief in a Carling Black Label Cup press conference in Midrand:

"Obviously he is a top player. He scored a top goal. He has been exceptional in the last month or so. It's for me as a goalkeeper to learn from that. I ask myself if I was lucky... It can happen to me next time."

"I have done my analysis, and rightfully so. It was an awkward angle. Big 'ups' to him for scoring in the final."

The Brazilians will take on AmaZulu in the first semi-final of the extravaganza on Saturday morning, where Williams and Mothwa will be on opposite ends of the Soccer City pitch.

Spectators warned about fake tickets

A full house of around 90 000 people is expected to turn out at Soccer City in Soweto for the Carling Black Label Cup.

As reported by Sports Brief, this will be the first time the competition has a four-team format, with Mamelodi Sundowns trying to negotiate past AmaZulu in one semi-final, and Kaizer Chiefs attempting to overcome Orlando Pirates again in the other one.

Unsurprisingly, opportunistic ticket scalpers will look to take advantage, with about 7 500 tickets sold in the vicinity of the stadium precinct confirmed to be fake. Spectators have been warned about this scourge.
