Onyango was part of the team forming the basis of Rhulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi's defence. They, however, failed to win the Champions League title, exiting at the quarter-finals stage.

Speaking to Mamelodi Sundowns' Digital Magazine, Onyango explained he was eager to go once again next season.

It was a great season for the team as we extended our dominance in South African football. We showed our class throughout the season, and the plan for the next campaign begins now. We are not resting on our laurels because, at Sundowns, we never stop pushing for the ultimate prize.

The 27-year-old joined the Brazilians in 2020 after his contract with Maritzburg United expired. He had before that suffered a career-threatening knee injury that forced him to sit out of Kenya's Africa Cup of Nations participation in 2019.
