Mamelodi Sundowns Eager to Defend Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup Title in Upcoming Tournament in Ulundi

Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to lift another trophy when they compete in the annual Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup.

The pre-season tournament that honours Prince Mangosutho Buthelezi was first held in 2018 and was won by Sundowns when they beat AmaZulu FC in the final.

The 2022 edition will see both sides return, where they will be joined by Richards Bay FC and Zululand District XI, The South African reported,

The two sides could potentially meet in the final of the tournament as well, as they were drawn against the other two KwaZulu-Natal sides in the semi-finals.

AmaZulu FC will face Zululand District XI in the first semi-final on July 23 at 9am.

Sundowns will then take on the Natal Rich Boyz at 11:00. The winners will meet in the final on the same day as 4pm. The tournament will be held in Ulundi.

Sundowns goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene, said that the tournament was a great way to see how the club is progressing during pre-season, Masandawana’s website reported.

“It’s very important that we come and play this tournament, it’s a good tournament for us as players to gauge ourselves. It will give us the chance to see how far we’ve gone with the preseason and for the coaches I think it’s important to see the combinations and the systems that they want to use this season.”

It’s been a season to remember for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Masandawana wrapped up the domestic treble with victory in the Nedbank Cup final as the team completed a clean sweep of all the trophies available in South Africa. Orlando Pirates are the only other South African side to achieve a domestic treble.

Sundowns’ treble success came thanks to a Thapelo Morena goal in the 120th minute of the Nedbank Cup final against Marumo Gallants.
