Sundowns scored in the second half thanks to a freekick by Aubrey Modiba. Modiba’s effort hit the wall and looped past the Royal AM keeper and into the back of the net just after the hour mark.

The goal spiced up the game which needed some action after a lacklustre first half.

Both teams had plenty of the ball in the first half but failed to create any chances. Victor Letsoalo was Royal AM’s biggest threat and looked most likely to score for the hosts in the first half but couldn’t get a shot on target.

At the halftime break, neither side had a shot on target. The second half was a very different affair, especially after Modiba’s goal.

Royal AM hit back ten minutes later when Thabo Matlaba scored for the home team. Matlaba’s fiery shot straight at Denis Onyango flew off the keeper’s gloves and into the back of the net.

Sundowns would not be undone and took the lead again just four minutes later. Peter Shalulile put Hugo Nyame under pressure as he tried to clear, getting a foot to it. The ball deflected into the path of Pavol Safranko who put it into the back of the net. Sadly Safranko was caught by a boot while taking the shot and had to be stretchered off the pitch following his goal.

Sundowns hung on to the one-goal lead for a win and booked their place in the final. Mamelodi Sundowns will play Marumo Gallants in the final on 28 May at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium at 6pm.

Marumo Gallants are one step closer to defending their Nedbank Cup title. Gallants beat Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila by a single goal in the first semi-final to book their place in the final.

Thato Khiba brought about the only goal of the game in the 64th minute, although the goal was credited as an own goal against Luvolwethu Mpeta. Khiba attempted to get a cross into the box which hit Mpeta’s boot and deflected over Gersin Kock’s head.

Gallants did push forward again and almost scored a second when Ndabayithethwa Ndlodlo’s long-range freekick was tipped over the bar by Kock. There was some drama towards the end of the game when Katlego Otladisa was shown a red card.
