Nigerian international Maduka Okoye produced another commanding performance between the posts as Udinese confirmed their Serie A status for the 2026/27 season, shutting out Torino in a 2-0 home victory on 2 May 2026.

The clean sheet was Okoye’s 10th in Serie A this campaign, matching his personal best for shutouts in a single season. The result left Udinese mathematically safe from relegation with four games still to play — a significant achievement for a club that has regularly navigated the lower reaches of the Italian top flight in recent seasons.

The opening exchanges were competitive, with chances falling at both ends. Torino’s Giovanni Simeone was denied from close range by Okoye in what proved to be a pivotal early intervention, while Gvidas Gineitis also squandered an opportunity from a corner routine. Udinese believed they had broken the deadlock when Nicolò Zaniolo converted a rebound after Adam Buksa struck the post, but the effort was disallowed for offside.

The hosts eventually made the breakthrough in first-half stoppage time. A defensive error from Saul Coco on a throw-in proved costly for Torino, with Oumar Solet and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp combining to release Kingsley Ehizibue, who finished from close range to give Udinese the lead they deserved.

Udinese extended their advantage in the second half through a set-piece. Thomas Kristensen rose unmarked at the back post to meet a Lennon Miller corner, guiding a glancing header into the net from six yards out to put the result beyond doubt.

Torino offered little in response and failed to mount any meaningful comeback. Zaniolo, who has endured a difficult spell in front of goal, also saw penalty appeals waved away as the afternoon grew increasingly frustrating for the visitors.

Okoye, 25, has been one of Udinese’s standout performers this season. The Düsseldorf-born shot-stopper, capped by Nigeria at senior level, joined Udinese on a permanent basis after an initial loan spell from Watford. His consistency throughout the 2025/26 campaign has been central to the club’s ability to accumulate sufficient points for survival well ahead of the final day.

For Udinese — known as the Zebras — retaining Serie A status is a recurring priority. The club, based in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northeast Italy, has spent the majority of the last three decades in the top flight but has frequently operated close to the relegation zone. Securing safety with matches to spare represents a degree of comfort not always enjoyed in recent campaigns.

Torino, meanwhile, remain in mid-table with their own season winding down without a clear objective in the standings. Their afternoon was compounded by the defensive lapse that gifted Udinese the opening goal, a moment that ultimately shaped the contest.
