Lookman’s Strike Ends Barcelona’s Champions League Dream as Flick Claims Side Deserved to Progress

Ademola Lookman's 31st-minute goal proved the decisive blow as Atletico Madrid eliminated Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Head coach Hansi Flick insisted his side merited a place in the semi-finals despite the defeat.

Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to a painful end on 14 April 2026, as Atletico Madrid advanced to the semi-finals on a 3-2 aggregate scoreline — with Nigeria international Ademola Lookman delivering the decisive contribution at the Metropolitano.

The quarter-final tie appeared firmly in Atletico’s favour after a 2-0 first-leg victory at Camp Nou the previous week. Barcelona, however, responded with a rapid second-leg comeback, with Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres both finding the net within the opening 24 minutes to level the aggregate score and threaten one of the competition’s more dramatic reversals.

The momentum shifted irrevocably in the 31st minute when Lookman scored for Atletico, restoring Diego Simeone’s side’s aggregate advantage. Although Barcelona went on to win the second leg 2-1, Lookman’s goal meant the overall tie ended 3-2 in Atletico’s favour, ending Flick’s side’s European involvement for the season.

Despite the exit, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick was unequivocal in his assessment of his team’s performance across both legs. “We’re disappointed. We had plenty of chances, especially in the first half. We had the chance to score a third goal, but instead we conceded,” Flick said. “I’m very proud of the team’s performance and the way we played. Over the two matches, we deserved to reach the semi-finals.”

Barcelona’s evening was further complicated by a second red card across the two legs. Defender Eric Garcia was shown a straight red card in the 79th minute following a VAR review conducted by French referee Clément Turpin, forcing Barcelona to see out the remainder of the tie with ten men. The dismissal echoed events from the first leg, where centre-back Pau Cubarsí had also been sent off, leaving Flick’s side undermanned at a critical stage of both fixtures.

Lookman, who joined Atletico Madrid from Atalanta in the summer of 2024, has developed into one of European football’s most reliable attacking threats. The Super Eagles forward’s strike against Barcelona adds to a growing list of significant contributions in continental competition, having previously been instrumental in Atalanta’s 2023-24 UEFA Europa League title run, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

The elimination represents a significant setback for Barcelona, who had entered the quarter-finals among the competition’s favourites under Flick. Having rebuilt following a turbulent financial period, the club’s failure to reach the last four continues a recent pattern of falling short in the knockout stages of the Champions League despite domestic promise.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, will now prepare for the semi-finals under Simeone, who has guided the club to Champions League semi-final appearances on multiple previous occasions, including final appearances in 2014 and 2016. Their opponents at that stage are yet to be confirmed following the completion of the remaining quarter-final ties.
