Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 first-leg advantage over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final at Camp Nou on Wednesday night, with Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman singling out Julian Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth for particular praise in his post-match assessment.
Lookman, who featured for 60 minutes before being substituted, was part of a compact Atlético defensive structure that stifled a Barcelona side that dominated possession but failed to convert their chances. Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, the Super Eagles forward reflected on what the result demonstrated about the squad’s collective mentality.
“It was a good result, the performance of the team, especially not to concede here. It shows the work everyone’s been doing and the togetherness,” Lookman said.
The match’s decisive moment arrived just before half-time, when Barcelona were reduced to ten men following a red card for Pau Cubarsí. Argentine forward Julián Álvarez converted from a free-kick to give Atlético the lead, and Lookman’s replacement Alexander Sørloth added a second goal in the second half as the hosts pushed forward in search of a response.
“If you say so. You know especially scoring after they had a man sent off, that was key as well. Brilliant free-kick from Julián (Álvarez) and also the timing of Alex’s (Alexander Sørloth) goal in the second half was also good,” Lookman added.
The result represents a significant away performance for Simeone’s side. Keeping a clean sheet at Camp Nou against a Barcelona team of this quality underlines Atlético’s defensive organisation, a hallmark of the Argentine manager’s tenure at the club. Atlético have historically been one of Europe’s most effective counter-attacking sides under Simeone, and Wednesday’s display was consistent with that reputation.
Lookman himself has been in strong form this season and has been closely associated with Atlético’s European campaign. The 27-year-old winger, who joined Atlético from Atalanta in the summer of 2024, has drawn considerable attention across the continent following his performances at club level and for the Super Eagles. Former Chelsea players and pundits have publicly backed him to play a decisive role in eliminating Barcelona from the competition.
With a 2-0 aggregate lead, Atlético Madrid will host the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano next Tuesday. Barcelona will need to overturn the deficit without the suspended Cubarsí, adding further complexity to their task. Should Atlético progress, it would mark another significant milestone in what has been a notable European run for the club this season.
Lookman, expected to feature more prominently in the second leg, will be looking to make a direct impact on the tie at home, having been withdrawn at the 60-minute mark in the first leg.
