Nunez Fires Back at Critics After Missing Chances in Liverpool Game

Darwin Nunez has responded to critics after he put in another mixed performance at Villa Park on December 26th.

Liverpool beat Aston Villa to restart their Premier League campaign on a high note after an unconvincing first spell before the World Cup break.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring early on before Virgil Van Dijk added a second one just 9 minutes from halftime. Ollie Watkins threatened an Aston Villa turnaround in the second half but teenager Stefan Bajčetić came off the bench to get his first senior goal and guarantee maximum points for Liverpool.

The game was however marked by another uninspiring performance in front of goal from Nunez. The Uruguay international had questionable decision-making skills with fans lashing out at him.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, he was satisfied with his overall work rate and took to Twitter to say:

Klopp echoed Nunez's sentiments by backing his striker to come good with time.

"The work rate he put in, the depth he creates for us, he is unstoppable at the moment, there is no defender who can really catch up speed-wise. I know all of the stories around, it is completely fine. He played an exceptional game tonight and we won 3-1, that’s all that counts," as quoted by the Guardian.

Salah equals landmark goal for Liverpool

At the same time, Egypt forward Mohamed Salah has equalled the legendary Kenny Dalglish's goal record at Liverpool after scoring in the victory against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Sports Brief reported that Salah opened the scoring and provided an assist as the Reds made a winning return to the English Premier League.

His goal against Aston Villa was his 172nd goal in the Liverpool shirt, and sits joint seventh in the list of scorers at the Merseyside outfit. Salah has also joined Steven Gerrard as the only players to score more than fifty goals and provide fifty assists in the English Premier League.
