  • Football fans were up in arms after the omission of Roberto Firmino from the final Brazil squad for the World Cup
  • Firmino, despite being part of a struggling Liverpool side this season, has been superb on an individual level
  • Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, Tottenham’s Richarlison and Neymar were all selected to lead the attack in Tite’s squad

Roberto Firmino’s omission from the Brazil World Cup squad has caused a massive debate on social media.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli was selected for the Qatar spectacle at the expense of the Liverpool man.

So far this season, Martinelli has netted five goals in 13 Premier League appearances, but statistics show Firmino has been in better form.

Liverpool have endured a torrid campaign so far domestically, but Firmino has been their shining light, bagging six goals in 12 games.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus has also been recalled after initially missing out on the friendlies in September.

Notably, Flamengo striker Pedro, who only has two caps for Brazil, was selected ahead of Firmino.

As far as the Brazil attack is concerned, here are the players selected as reported on by BBC:

Antony (Manchester United), Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal), Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal), Neymar (PSG), Pedro (Flamengo), Raphinha (Barcelona), Rodrygo (Real Madrid), Richarlison (Tottenham Hotspur), Vinicius Jr (Real Madrid).

Fan reaction to Firmino's exclusion

As expected, a section of fans on social media were not content with Firmino missing out on the spectacle.

“The fact that Bobby Firmino is not on Brazil squad is insane to me. He is a completely different player to any of those names on that list. Once again, overlooked. Really feel for him on a personal level. Good for Liverpool as he gets some rest but really tough mentally for him,” one fan reacted.
“Firmino scored more goals than Martinelli Jesus Richarlison Rodrygo Antony and Raphinha,” another added.
“What are they smoking at Brazil why didn’t they select Sir Bobby Firmino for their World Cup squad, I’m so gutted right now and they won’t be winning it”

Telles cries after Brazil selection

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on how Manchester United left-back Alex Telles was brought to tears after he was named in Brazil's final squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

The player, currently on loan at Sevilla, watched the announcement of the squad with his pregnant wife.

In a video posted on social media, Telles shed tears of joy as he kissed his unborn baby, before going on to celebrate the moment with his partner.
