  • Arsene Wenger believes Liverpool are ‘missing something’ which they had last season
  • The Reds are struggling in the lead and are languishing in ninth place after a 3-3 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion
  • One of the biggest changes Liverpool underwent in the summer was losing their star forward Sadio Mane

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was at pains to explain why Liverpool were enduring a tough start to the 2022/23 ccampaign.

After a gruelling 2021/22 campaign that saw Jurgen Klopp’s side play the maximum number of games possible, Liverpool are currently struggling in the league.

Many anticipated it would be the same case of Manchester City battling it out with the Reds for the title, but after eight games of the campaign, Liverpool look out of the race already.

The 3-3 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, October 1 summed up their campaign so far as they sit ninth on the log with 10 points, a massive 11 behind leaders Arsenal.

Wenger, while speaking on BeIn Sport, admitted it was difficult to decipher what was ailing Liverpool this season.

“It’s difficult to understand. They have the same core and the same type of playing style. But they are less effective at getting the ball back than before. Nunez, at the moment, hasn’t played much for them yet, and they’ve made a big investment. He is sitting on the bench.” He said as reported by Foot Mercato.

The former Arsenal tactician was also quick to point out a major change Liverpool endured; losing Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich.

“They lost Mané, who was a top player in big games. He had something, an aggressive attitude and determination. He would score no matter what, he would make things happen. It’s hard to measure what it takes away from them. They are missing something they had before.”

Mane left Liverpool for Bayern Munich for £35m in the summer, with the Reds bringing in Darwin Nunez in what was considered a direct replacement of the Senegalese forward.

At Bayern, Mane hit the ground running but suffered from a slight dip in form, but was recently amongst the goals in a 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
