  • French World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf has told Trent Alexander-Arnold that he is a "Championship-level defender"
  • The Liverpool star has started the season poorly, costing his side goals with his defensive shortcomings
  • Leboeuf added that Jurgen Klopp's style has covered up Alexander-Arnold's weaknesses at Anfield

Trent Alexander-Arnold critics are coming out in droves, with French 1998 World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf the latest to air his opinion on Trent's poor start to the season.

The French pundit said that although Trent is an elite offensive fullback, his defensive qualities have been masked for way too long by Jurgen Klopp's system at Liverpool.

According to the Daily Mail, the French World Cup winner did not mince his words when talking about the young England star, going as far as calling him a "Championship-level defender".

The Liverpool star's poor start to the season has coincided with the Red's sluggish start to the season, accumulating just 9 points from a possible 18.

Leboeuf wants to work with Alexander-Arnold on basics

Leboeuf was also part of the French golden generation side that won the Euro 2000. However, the 54-year-old feels he knows where the 23-year-old can improve.

I love the guy, his offensive qualities. But defensively, he's championship level.

Leboeuf boldly said that the youngster can only thrive in Klopp's system. He offered to train with Trent to improve his defensive awareness.

Only Klopp's system works for him. When it doesn't work as well as it has this season, all you see is his defensive shortcomings.
I want to take him with me to work on the basics. I would say to him: "Turn your head and look behind you, it will be better already."

The right-back has also fallen down the pecking order for the England national team, with Kyle Walker and Reece James picked before him in England's latest match against Italy.

Alexander-Arnold risks missing out on a starting sport for England

Sports Brief earlier reported on Rio Ferdinand's warning to Alexander-Arnold that his recent performances may see him miss the starting spot for England at the World Cup.

Trent's performances this season and a serious competition for the right-wing back for England means he needs to improve quickly. The Englishman has been an essential player during Liverpool's revival under Klopp, which has seen them win every club trophy the last few years.
