Everton played out to a goalless stalemate with Liverpool in the first meeting of the Merseyside clash at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

The game's first clear chance fell on Tom Davies after new signing Neal Maupay attempted to put a shot away. Davies quickly pounced on the loose ball but agonizingly watched his shot hit the right post and cannon back into play.

Darwin Nunez, coming back from suspension, had some half chances for Liverpool but couldn't quite place his headers. The Uruguayan, however, had a perfect opportunity to put his side ahead when he latched onto a long ball before chesting it down nicely in Everton's penalty area.

Jordan Pickford pushed Nunez's shot to the crossbar with the ball falling kindly on Luis Diaz. Diaz cut in on the host's defence before unleashing a curving ball that hit the frame of the post. Everton survived the onslaught as the game headed into the break goalless.

Jurgen Klopp withdrew Fabio Cavarlho for Roberto Firmino after the break. The substitution was immediately impactful, with Liverpool holding Everton back. Firmino had two headers in quick succession, which were both saved by Pickford.

Everton then had the chance to go ahead when Demerai Gray led a counterattack before feeding Maupay. The Frenchman failed to beat Alison Becker as the search for the goal continued.

The goal eventually did come when Maupay shrugged off James Milner before supplying Cono Coady, who turned the ball into an empty net. But after a lengthy VAR check, the goal was chalked off for offside.

Alison made a save from substitute Dwight McNeil late on.

Jurgen Klopp believes Darwin Nunez has learnt his lesson after red card against Crystal Palace

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Darwin Nunez has learnt his lesson.

Nunez was sent off on his Anfield debut for headbutting Crystal Palace's defender Joachim Andersen.

The newly-signed striker has since served his suspension and will be available once again for Klopp ahead of their trip to Goodison Park.
