  • Liverpool had the better of Premier League champions Manchester City in the 100th edition of the Community Shield on Saturday evening
  • Goals from new signing Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold were enough to hand Jurgen Klopp's charges the first piece of silverware of the new season
  • Liverpool's triumph over fierce rivals Manchester City is the Reds first Community Shield success since 2006

Liverpool and Manchester City renewed hostilities on Saturday evening at Leicester City's King Power Stadium in the traditional curtain-raiser to the English domestic season.

The 100th edition of the Community Shield began on a blistering note and it was the Merseyside outfit who began the game on the front foot as the trident of Mo Salah, Firmino and Luis Diz peppered the goal area of Man City with Salah going closest as his effort missed the pole by a whisker.

Liverpool pursued relentlessly for the game's opener when full-back Andy Robertson got in front of his marker to power his header wide of the left post after 14 minutes.

Man City's Ederson was called to action for the first time in the 19th minute when Luis Diaz's shot towards the middle of the goal was expertly repelled by the Brazilian as the game continued at a supersonic speed.

The Reds were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Trent Alexander-Arnold unleashed an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box which zoomed into the back of the net via the left post.

Arnold's opener after 21 minutes awoke the attacking machinery of Man City as the Cityzens looked for a quick response with talisman Kevin De Bruyne getting close.

But it was former Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland whose close-range effort was superbly saved by third-choice goalkeeper Adrian.

The tempo of the game reduced slightly towards the end of halftime despite Pep Guardiola's charges having the lion's share of possession.

The second half was no different in terms of intensity as both sides battled for supremacy. But it was Liverpool custodian Adrian who was called to action early on in the second half as he thwarted an effort from Riyad Mahrez.

A raft of changes by both managers saw Darwin Nunez introduced by Jurgen Klopp with Guardiola on the other hand throwing Julian Alvarez into the thick of affairs.

And Pep's substitution proved a masterstroke when the Argentine struck home from a rebound to level the score for Man City after a long VAR check with less than 20 minutes left on the clock.

Alvarez's goal upped the ante for Man City as the Premier League champions sought for the winner but Liverpool will deal their fierce rivals a soccer punch with eight minutes left on the clock.

Salah's cross was met by Darwin Nunez, whose header was handled by Ruben Dias which resulted in a penalty after referee Craig Pawson consulted the VAR. And Mo Salah perfectly dispatched from 12 yards to restore the lead for Liverpool.

Substitute Darwin Nunez added the icing on the cake when he guided a well-timed header to put the icing on the cake for Liverpool.

Liverpool suffers huge injury blow to top midfielder

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain faces some time on the sidelines as Jurgen Klopp confirmed he has suffered a hamstring injury.

Earlier this month, Chamberlain was forced off in the first half during a friendly against Crystal Palace.

The news will come as a major blow for Chamberlain in particular as the 28-year old is just entering the final year of his Liverpool contract.
