Veteran English midfielder James Milner has commended the performance of his Liverpool teammates in their penultimate Premier League game against Southampton.

The Reds had their last-but-one league game postponed to Tuesday, May 17 due to their FA Cup engagement over the weekend, which resulted in their second trophy of the campaign to keep their quadruple chase intact.

The 19-time English champions had to dig deep to record a 2-1 win over a stubborn Southampton side at the St Mary's Stadium to go within a point of league leaders Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp made nine changes to his starting lineup and it appeared the German tactician's gamble had backfired when Nathan Redmond drew first blood for the home side after the 13th minute.

But Japanese attacker Takumi Minamino restored parity for Liverpool three minutes to the half-hour mark after he was set up by Diogo Jota.

Klopp's men will complete the fightback when Matip's fortuitous header nestled at the back of the net in the 67th minute.

The Cameroonian's third strike of the season proved to be the match-winner as Liverpool held on to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory to breathe down the necks of Man City ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Liverpool keep slim title chase alive with hard-fought win over Southampton

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Liverpool showed character and grit to fight off a stubborn Southampton team to keep their Premier League title ambitions alive.

The Reds fought back from a goal down to earn an important victory that leaves them just one point behind league leaders, Manchester City heading into the final matchday of the season.

Nathan Redmond had shocked the Reds after he gave Southampton an early lead against a much-changed Liverpool side without Mohammed Salah or Sadio Mane in the starting line-up.
