  • Debates in football will never cease and the most recent discussion about the best defender of all time has sharply divided opinions
  • Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was described by Michael Owen as the best defender in the history of the sport
  • But it appears the hallowed description conferred on the Dutch stalwart has not been well received by football followers, who argue he will be bullied by Didier Drogba

Football fans across the globe have reacted in the wake of Virgil van Dijk's description by Michael Owen as the best central defender of all time.

Michael Owen, a former winner of the coveted Ballon d'Or award, in his post-match analysis during the Champions League semifinal tie between Liverpool and Villarreal, heaped praise on the Dutch defender.

Owen's praise was born out of fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand's comments, who described Virgil as the best defender in the world presently.

"It’s easy, Van Dijk is the best centre back on the planet right now," Rio Ferdinand said in his post-game analysis which was elevated by Owen.
"I will go further. I think he is the best centre-back of all time" as quoted by News Euro 24.

The comments especially that of Owen has not sat well with most football follower suggesting Van Dijk does not qualify to be tagged as the best ever in his position.

The football fans contend the Liverpool defender will be sent to the cleaners by ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

Below are some of the comments by football fans:

Liverpool defender reveals why he uses only his first name at the back of his shirt

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk only uses his first name on the back of his Liverpool shirt because of a 'family feud'.

The Dutch centre-back has used his first name on shirts throughout his professional career, having opted for it during his time at Celtic and Southampton too.

While Van Dijk himself has not commented much on the reason, his uncle has disclosed it has something to do with the defender not getting along with his father.
