  • Jurgen klopp had an interesting reaction to Pep Guardiola’s recent comments about Liverpool’s ambitions
  • Guardiola seemed to suggest that Liverpool had an incredible history in European competitions, but not in the Premier League
  • Liverpool and Manchester City are currently embroiled in an intense race for the Premier League title, with little margin for error

Jurgen Klopp could not help but laugh off comments made by Pep Guardiola about Liverpool’s record in the Premier League as the two managers’ fierce rivalry went off the pitch.

The Reds recently suffered a huge blow to their title ambitions after a 1-1 draw against Tottenham coupled with Man City’s 5-0 win over Newcastle gave Pep Guardiola’s side a decent advantage in the title race with three games to go.

Despite the emphatic win over Newcastle, Pep Guardiola was not necessarily in joyous mood after the game, and he could not help but aim a subtle jibe at his fierce rivals from Merseyside.

During the post-match interview, Guardiola boldly claimed there was an institutional bias towards Liverpool in England, and “everyone supported the club”.

“Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone.” Guardiola said as quoted by BBC.

“Of course because Liverpool has an incredible history in European competition. Not in the Premier League, because they have won one in 30 years, but it is not a problem at all.”

Klopp’s response

The eye-catching comments were brought to the attention of Klopp in the pre-match presser ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa.

Klopp burst out laughing, in a clear show of disapproval and ridicule of Guardiola’s sentiments.

When he finally came to address his fierce rival’s comments, Klopp said as quoted by Sky:

“I live in Liverpool. Here a lot of people want us to win the league, that’s true. But even here, probably only 50 per cent! The other people are involved in another fight, at least until yesterday.
“As manager, I’ve had this experience recently, after a game we’re obviously influenced by the game, by the situation, stuff like this. I said after the game Spurs play like they play and they’re still only fifth. Would I say it again? No.
