  • The top 10 list of highest goalscorers in the Premier League this season is dominated by Liverpool players
  • The trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Diogo Jota all feature in the list after hitting double figures
  • Despite Man United's poor season, Cristiano Ronaldo is among the standout players after his incredible goalscoring form

With the 2021/22 Premier League season hitting the homestretch, the division's top marksmen have trained their eyes on the prestigious Golden Boot award.

Just like in previous seasons, the battle for the individual prize is proving to be competitive and unpredictable, even with few matches left to end the campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane won the award last season after he notched 23 goals but looks unlikely to recapture it after a slow start this term.

Mohamed Salah, who has won the Golden Boot on two occasions, is leading the hunt for the gong, having found the back of the net 22 times this season.

The Egyptian added to his tally during Liverpool's meeting with Man United back on Tuesday, April 19, when he netted a brace against the Red Devils.

However, he has failed to score in two of Liverpool's most recent outings, a poor run that could see him miss out on the award.

So who else is challenging Mohamed Salah for the Golden Boot?

Apparently, Salah is facing stiff competition from a number of players in the race for the Golden Boot.

Tottenham's Son Heung-Min, veteran striker Cristiano Ronaldo, and fellow Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota are some of the players challenging Salah for the prize.

Among the three, it is Ronaldo who has taken everyone by surprise, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner proving his doubters wrong with his scoring prowess this season.

The Portuguese talisman has scored 17 league goals since his return to Old Trafford last summer, with his last goal coming against Chelsea last Thursday.

He will be hoping to add to his tally when United host Brentford on Monday night, May 2, at Old Trafford.

Below are the top 10 goalscorers in the EPL as of Sunday, May 1:

1. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) - 22 goals

2. Son Heung-Min (Tottenham) - 19 goals

3. Cristiano Ronaldo (Man United) - 17 goals

4. Diogo Jota (Liverpool) - 15 goals

5. Sadio Mane (Liverpool) - 14 goals

6. Harry Kane (Tottenham) - 13 goals

7. Ivan Toney (Brentford) - 12 goals

8. Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace) - 12 goals

9. Kevin De Bruyne (Man City) - 11 goals

10. Riyad Mahrez (Man City) - 11 goals

11. Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) - 11 goals

Man United given hope of signing Frenkie de Jong

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Manchester United's hopes of signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong have been boosted after the Catalan giants found a replacement for the Dutchman.

Despite Xavi being a huge admirer of De Jong, Barca are believed to have put up the midfielder for sale in a bid to balance their books.

Reports claim Barcelona have already embarked on an elaborate plan to find a replacement for the Dutch international.

The La Liga giants are believed to be looking in the direction of Carlos Soler to fill the void De Jong will leave.
