Kaizer Chiefs to Appeal PSL Decision to Deny Postponement Request

Kaizer Chiefs are set to appeal the Premier Soccer League's decision to deny their match postponement request.

This was after the Naturena-based side was struck by a Covid-19 outbreak at the beginning of the month, which made dozens of players and non-playing personnel unavailable. The PSL reasoned that the Amakhosi were afforded the opportunity to provide information in support of the request.

A statement from the PSL concluded:

“Having exhaustively considered all aspects of the matter, and the information provided, the Executive Committee today resolved that Kaizer Chiefs has not established a basis to reverse the decision of the Football Department."

Chiefs released its own statement in which the club said that its medical department as well as management had concluded that the amount of players missing out would make honouring two fixtures impractical. The fixtures in question were Cape Town City and Lamontville Golden Arrows, which the club might now have to forfeit, losing six points in total.

It's statement read:

"Kaizer Chiefs is disappointed and taken aback by the contrasting lack of urgency from the PSL after having taken almost three weeks to address the matter. The reason might be that the League did not have a Chief Medical Officer who could have advised those dealing with the issue from an NICD and Department of Health protocols perspective."

The club also said that it would not have benefited from a postponement, as this would have caused an inconvenient congestion in fixtures towards the end of the season.

The statement concluded:

"In this specific case, we urge the governing structures of football to deal with the situation in a manner that is warranted by these extraordinary circumstances. We believe justice will prevail in the end."

Gavin Hunt brushes off Pirates link rumours

Jobless Gavin Hunt was dismissive of rumours linking him with the head coach position at Orlando Pirates.

As reported by Sports Brief, Hunt was sacked unceremoniously by Chippa United last week with Pirates currently being managed by a caretaker coach.

Hunt, the longest serving coach in the league, has four league titles to his name, having won three on the bounce at SuperSport United and one at now-defunct Bidvest Wits.
