  • 'Kasi flava' continues to be divisive with proponents and detractors continuously debating its merits
  • This time, former Amazulu director Lunga Sokhela has blasted the showboating that is characteristic of South African football
  • This is after Kaizer Chiefs starlet Mduduzi Tshabalala showed off his unique skills last weekend in a DStv Diski Shield match

Kasi flava has its supporters locally, but there are those who are against the showboating some describe as disrespectful to opponents.

This time, a detractor came in the form of Amazulu director Lunga Sokhela. He went on social media to blast the oftentimes ridiculous skills players pull out towards the end of professional matches that have been won, or in township games where crowds demand them.

Sokhela said on his Twitter account:

“I hate Kasi flavour! (It is) Absolute rubbish,” wrote Sokhela on his Twitter account. “That’s not football, it’s a clown show. (It) Should never be promoted like it is. We will never be a respected footballing nation if we see that as entertaining football.”

The term 'kasi flava' was coined by the late Kaizer Chiefs midfielder and SuperSport tv analyst Shakes Kungwane, who enjoyed using the term during segments on the channel's programming which showed showboating compilations.

According to The Citizen, Sokhela's tirade came on the back of what happened last weekend in a DStv Diski Challenge. In a quarterfinal game Chiefs went on to win 4-2 against SuperSport United, young Amakhosi star Mduduzi Tshabalala started showboating against Matsatsantsa.

This excited those who were in attendance and those who were watching from home.

Xolani "Blackberry" Nkala shows off dancing 'kasi flava' with the ball, referee calls a foul for skills

Those who watched it at the venue and at home can claim to have finally seen it all on a football pitch.

As reported on Sports Brief, Magician Xolani "Blackberry" Nkala displayed a unique form of 'kasi flava' for his team Mambas FC against Free Agents in the DStv Ekasi Champ Of Champs tournament in Meadowlands, Soweto. 'Kasi flava' means "the outrageous over-the-top skills and tricks that define a football culture".

Nkala stopped after receiving the ball, lifted it up into his thighs and started performing the 'Zekethe' dance, to the pleasure of the spectators.
