“Well done UCT for honouring the founder and chairman of one of Africa’s most successful, solid and well-run institutions, Kaizer Chiefs. It’s long overdue to refer to the chairman as Dr Kaizer Motaung. We’re proud and inspired.”

In 2004, Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza was the recipient of an honorary doctorate in Philosophy by the University of Zululand. This was in recognition of his services to the game, particularly recognising his efforts in seeing South Africa being awarded the rights to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Motaung was also a key figure in this campaign, and was also a co-founder with Khoza of the Premier Soccer League in 1996. Motaung sits on the league's board of governors, overseas matters at Chiefs and is involved in SAFA's executive committee matters.

It's a family affair as parent and child combos rule the PSL roost

Several clubs in the top tier of South African football prefer to keep key decisions in the hands of family.

As reported on Sports Brief, Royal AM, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City are the most prominent of these clubs.

Interestingly, Andile Mpisane is a part-time player at Royal AM on top of being its chairman, while Kaizer Motaung Jr retired straight into a key position at Kaizer Chiefs.
