Itumeleng Khune Experiences Worst Season as a Professional Footballer, Has Played Just Once for Kaizer Chiefs

Once the golden boy of South African football, Itumeleng Khune is now resigned to warming the bench at Kaizer Chiefs.

Itu is experiencing his worst season as a professional footballer, making only one appearance for the Amakhosi this season.

Khune’s only appearance for Chiefs came in the MTN8 competition in August 2021 against Mamelodi Sundowns. He has yet to feature for the team in the DStv Premiership and there are only three games of the season remaining. As reported by KickOff, even if Itu plays the three remaining games, he will still experience the worst season ever since making his debut 15 years ago. The current record for the least amount of games he has played in a season came in the 2019/20 season when he only made six appearances for the side.

He did suffer a few injuries that season though. Many expected that he would be given a chance after Stuart Baxter was axed but he is still yet to be called upon.

Interim coach Arthur Zwane recently addressed the issue and said that Khune must wait his turn, Times LIVE reported.

Zwane added that Khune was a professional and was pushing himself hard in training, but added that there was competition for places in the squad and that the other keepers were performing well.

Former Kaizer Chiefs player, Zebulon “Sputla“ Nhlapo, also shared his thoughts on the matter and believes that Khune should become Zwane’s assistant, IOL reported. Nhlapo believes that Zwane should be given the job permanently and believes that Khune would make the perfect assistant for him.

Itumuleng Khune has no plans of retiring just yet, despite not playing as many games as he and his fans would like. Itu recently spoke about his future and game time and added that he still had another 10 years in him and would retire once Italy's Gianluigi Buffon did, Soccer Laduma reported.

Khune hasn't featured for the Amakhosi since August 2021 and fans are clamouring for him to return to the Kaizer Chiefs first-team squad. Khune's skill was on show at the DStv Compact Cup when he helped the Warriors beat Amabutho to book a place in the final.

Khune's performance got fans talking about how good the keeper still is, the Kaizer Chiefs website reported. Fans are still talking about Khune on social media as well as the final of the DStv Compact Cup approaches. Khune's Warriors will take on Coastal United, Sports Brief reported at the time.
