Kaizer Chiefs status as the glamour team of South African football is waning if their transfer business in recent weeks is anything to go by.

The Amakhosi could not land a single transfer during the half-season January window as other rivals went about their way without any hassles. They were reduced to renewing the contracts of seven players already on their books.

The last time Chiefs had such a miserable time seeking to add fresh blood to their stocks was when they were handed a two-window transfer ban by FIFA. As reported by BBC Sport, this was due to improper practices by the club in trying to acquire a player back in 2019.

Among other failings, Goal.com detailed how Mamelodi Sundowns beat them to the signature of Teboho Mokoena, while talks to sign Siyethemba Sithebe between Chiefs and AmaZulu broke down.

The club said in a statement on its website that there was a reluctance by other teams to sell them players during the current AFCON 2021-related break.

It read:

"The club did enquire about the availability of some players with a few clubs in the league during the January transfer window period, but there was general reluctance from some of those clubs to do business even though the players expressed their interest in joining Amakhosi."

"Kaizer Chiefs will continue to do business on a willing buyer, willing seller policy with other clubs in the future."

Sithebe agreed to join the Amakhosi at the end of the current season when his contract with the Usuthu ends, but Amazulu owner Sandile Zungu wasn’t happy with the way the Sowetan club approached the player, as reported on Sports Brief.

Last week, Zungu promised that Sithebe would never wear the Amazulu jersey again while he was at the club, but coach Benni McCarthy has a different take on the matter, saying he would be available for selection amid the shenanigans above him.
