  • The Premier Soccer League has announced on social media that its chairman Irvin Khoza will be hosting a televised press conference
  • Though the subjects of the press conference weren't discussed, it comes amid legal matters the organisation has to resolve quickly

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced a televised press conference for tomorrow, Wednesday, 4 July, which led to whispers and outright shouting about its purpose.

The posts on the PSL's official Facebook and Twitter pages stated that chairman Irvin Khoza would host the press conference, but did not specify the subjects of the gathering. The PSL is currently embroiled in various legal matters which need to be resolved speedily.

Kaizer Chiefs did not honour fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows last month after a Covid-19 outbreak at the club, reported IOL. The club had requested a postponement of these and other fixtures, something the governing body requested. There is a distinct possibility that the Amakhosi could be docked points.

Another outstanding matter involves Royal AM, which was crowned champions at the end of the 2020/21 National First Division season, guaranteeing the club automatic promotion to the DSTV Premiership. However, Sekhukhune United were then confirmed as the winners of the title because of a technicality stemming from a fixture against Limpopo rivals Polokwane City.

As detailed in Soccer Laduma, City had improperly selected players for this match, resulting in United being awarded three crucial points, leapfrogging them above Royal AM. This resulted in an uproar for the ages, which threatened to upend the 2021/22 South African football season, with the matter going as far up as the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Amid this furore, Royal AM Shauwn "MaMkhize" Mkhize bought out DStv Premiership side Bloemfontein Celtic's league status.

The response to the Facebook and Twitter posts were speculative.

Nathi Mtolo said:

"I hope it's about fans will be allowed back into stadiums because already in Spain they are filling up their stadiums."

@DonaldSirewu said:

"I hope this conference is to announce a change in format for that DStv Compact Cup."

Ayabonga Mxotwa said:

"VAR, Chairman, for PSL is needed."

Kaizer Motaung expresses surprise at PSL decision to deny Kaizer Chief's request

Kaizer Chiefs will be an interested party as the PSL chairman Irvin Khoza hosts a press conference tomorrow.

The Amakhosi had a request to postpone fixtures after dozens of players were taken ill with Covid-19, something the league eventually declined.

As reported in Sports Brief, founder and chairman Kaizer Motaung expressed surprise and disappointment with the decision in a statement on the club's website.
