  • Juventus' latest scandal could trap her former and current players as well
  • The Serie A side were deducted 15 points last week due to financial irregularities
  • Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala are among the players who could be suspended

Current and former Juventus players including Cristiano Ronaldo could be in trouble as the problems facing the Serie A club continue to mount.

Juventus were last week docked 15 points over fraudulent financial wrongdoings. The Italian Football Federation made the announcement on January 20th, 2023.

The ruling saw Juventus drop to 9th place and put their chances of playing in the Champions League next season in serious jeopardy unless they win the Europa League. The club has since confirmed that they intend to appeal the decision.

However, even before the dust settles on the Federation's decision, it has now emerged that 23 players in Juventus' roster during the 2019/2020 season are facing possible suspensions.

What did the players do?

Italian journalist Paolo Ziliani opines that if the players are found to have falsely accepted lower wages, then they would be liable for a 30-day suspension, irrespective of whether or not they are still at the club.

The players would be investigated for faking the wavering of their salaries to make the losses disappear from the balance sheet.

Top of this list is Cristiano Ronaldo who played for Juventus for three years before leaving for Manchester United. He is now in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr.

Antonio Conte's Tottenham Hotspur could be the worst-hit team. Spurs director of football Fabio Paratici was among those banned from football after the decision. It remains to be seen whether the ban would apply in other leagues as well.

Spurs also have two former Juventus players in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentacur who were there during the said season. Paulo Dybala, now at AS Roma, will also be affected. Then Head Coach Maurizo Sarri, now Lazio's boss will also be roped into this Italian scandal.

Ziliani also reports that Matthijs de Ligt and Mattia De Sciglio allegedly provided the investigators with WhatsApp chats by then-captain Giorgio Chiellini who explained the scam to the players.

What happened to Juventus?

Sports Brief had reported that Serie A giants Juventus have been dealt a blow after being deducted 15 points following an investigation into the club’s transfer activities.

The points deduction is set to push Juventus to mid-table, with 20 games of the season to go. It is being reported that an investigation brought to light that the club fixed their balance sheets by artificial gains from club transfers.
