Real Madrid’s search for a new head coach is entering its decisive phase, with president Florentino Perez reportedly prepared to act swiftly once Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona has concluded. According to reports, the club intends to accelerate its managerial process the moment the La Liga title race reaches a mathematical conclusion.

Los Blancos travel to Camp Nou on Sunday in a fixture that carries enormous consequences. A failure to win would hand Barcelona the La Liga title with three games of the season still remaining, adding further urgency to what has already been a turbulent campaign at the Santiago Bernabéu.

According to Marca, Real Madrid plans to intensify its search for a successor to Alvaro Arbeloa immediately after the final whistle on Sunday. The club has reportedly been dealing with a season marred by high-profile dressing room altercations, and Perez is said to be prioritising a candidate capable of restoring internal discipline.

Reports have confirmed that Real Madrid is now in direct contact with Jose Mourinho, who has emerged as the leading candidate for the position. The Portuguese manager, who previously led the club between 2010 and 2013, winning one La Liga title and reaching the Champions League semi-finals on multiple occasions, is reportedly considered an immediate and available option.

Mourinho’s candidacy is not without conditions. According to reports, the 63-year-old has already communicated his requirements to the club, which include full control over team selections, the installation of his own coaching staff, and the departure of at least seven first-team players. Whether Perez is willing to meet those demands in full is understood to be the central question now facing the club’s hierarchy.

The broader shortlist reportedly includes Mauricio Pochettino, Lionel Scaloni, and Didier Deschamps. However, all three present a significant logistical obstacle: Pochettino is currently managing the United States national team, Scaloni leads Argentina, and Deschamps remains in charge of France. Each would only become available following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer. Mourinho, by contrast, is unattached and could begin work immediately.

Zinedine Zidane and Jurgen Klopp have both been ruled out of consideration, according to reports, narrowing the realistic options for an immediate appointment. Klopp, who left Liverpool in 2024 after nine years in charge, has since taken on a role with Red Bull’s global football operations. Zidane, who won three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, has remained out of management since his second departure from the club in 2021.

The timing of any appointment will hinge significantly on Sunday’s result. Should Barcelona secure the title at Camp Nou, the pressure on Perez to move quickly and decisively on a new manager is expected to intensify further. A Real Madrid victory, on the other hand, would keep the title race alive and could momentarily ease the external scrutiny surrounding the club’s managerial situation, though the search would continue regardless.

Mourinho’s potential return to the Bernabéu would mark a significant moment in Spanish football, given the intensity of his first tenure, which was defined as much by confrontation — with officials, opponents, and at times his own players — as it was by results. Whether that profile aligns with what Perez now requires from his next appointment remains, according to reports, the defining consideration in the decision ahead.
