Jorrel Hato Named Chelsea Player of the Month Despite Dismal April That Cost Manager Liam Rosenior His Job

The 20-year-old Dutch defender claimed 44% of the fan vote for April, a month in which Chelsea won just one of five matches and conceded seven goals across three Premier League defeats.

Chelsea’s decision to name defender Jorrel Hato as their Player of the Month for April has drawn widespread criticism from supporters, many of whom questioned the merit of the award given the club’s deeply disappointing performances throughout the month.

Hato, 20, received 44% of the fan vote to claim the honour for the first time since completing his move from Ajax last summer. Despite the individual recognition, the broader context of Chelsea’s April form has made the announcement difficult for many supporters to accept.

The Blues managed just one win across the entire month โ€” a commanding 7-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Port Vale on 4 April. That result, however, proved to be an outlier in an otherwise troubled period. In the Premier League, Chelsea suffered three consecutive defeats: a 0-3 loss to Manchester City, a 0-1 defeat to Manchester United, and a 0-3 reversal against Brighton. The collapse in form and confidence ultimately led to the departure of manager Liam Rosenior last week.

Amid the broader team struggles, Hato was noted for his relative consistency and composure in defence, which his supporters cited as justification for the award. Nevertheless, the announcement triggered a sharp backlash on social media, with fans questioning the logic of recognising any individual performance during such a damaging run of results.

One supporter wrote on X: “This club is a joke ๐Ÿ˜† scored zero goals and conceded alot only to name a defender player of the month.” Another posted an image with the caption “Have some shame!”, while others suggested the majority of the fanbase would not even recognise the award recipient. A further comment read: “75% of the Chelsea fanbase have no idea who this is.”

Hato joined Chelsea from Dutch side Ajax ahead of the 2025-26 season, arriving as one of the more highly regarded young defenders in European football at the time of his transfer. The left-sided defender had been a regular starter for Ajax and had attracted interest from several top clubs before making the move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s April collapse represents one of the more turbulent stretches of the club’s season. Rosenior’s dismissal following the run of three Premier League defeats without scoring underscores the severity of the situation, with the club’s ownership now tasked with identifying a replacement capable of stabilising results before the season concludes.

With the Premier League campaign entering its final weeks, Chelsea’s standing in the table and their trajectory heading into the summer transfer window will be closely scrutinised. The reaction to Hato’s award reflects broader supporter frustration with the club’s direction, and the scale of the task facing whoever takes charge next.
