Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has confirmed that his sustained public criticism of the west London club has generated significant hostility from within its current structure, including the BlueCo ownership group, active players, and sporting directors.
Speaking on his podcast, the Obi One Podcast, Mikel addressed the internal friction directly, making clear that the reaction from those currently running and representing the club has done nothing to temper his willingness to speak out.
“Chelsea FC is angry with me cos I’m saying the truth. The players, the sporting directors, the owners are all angry with me, but they can get angry as much as they want; I was in that club for 11 years and I gave my all. I sacrificed and missed important people’s birthdays. Nobody is bigger than a football club,” Mikel said.
The 38-year-old Nigerian cited his longevity and commitment at Stamford Bridge as the basis for his right to evaluate the club’s current direction. He framed his critiques not as an attack on Chelsea, but as a reflection of his investment in the club’s standards and winning culture — standards he argues have deteriorated under the current ownership.
Mikel’s tenure at Chelsea ran from August 2006 to January 2017, during which he accumulated 372 appearances for the club. That period yielded a substantial trophy haul: two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Europa League — a record that gives considerable weight to his assessments of where the club currently stands.
Since the Todd Boehly-led BlueCo consortium completed their takeover of Chelsea in May 2022, the club has spent in excess of £1 billion on transfer fees across multiple windows, yet has struggled to mount consistent title challenges or progress reliably in European competition. It is within this context that Mikel’s criticism has been most pointed.
This is not the first time his outspoken commentary has provoked a direct response. On a previous occasion, Chelsea loanee Nicolas Jackson publicly reacted to Mikel’s assessments on social media, telling the former midfielder to “shut your mouth” — an exchange that drew widespread attention and underscored the tension between the current squad and the club’s former players who have been vocal critics.
Mikel has remained consistent in his position, maintaining that his commentary is driven entirely by a desire to see Chelsea return to the level of consistent success he experienced during his playing years. Whether the club’s hierarchy will engage with or continue to distance itself from that criticism remains to be seen, particularly as Chelsea navigate a transitional period under their current ownership model.
