Joao Palhinha Header Keeps Tottenham’s Relegation Survival Bid Alive as Tolu Arokodare Endures Another Difficult Outing

A late header from Joao Palhinha gave Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 victory over already-relegated Wolves at Molineux on April 25, 2026, as Super Eagles forward Tolu Arokodare once again failed to make an impact from the bench.

Tottenham Hotspur remain in the Premier League relegation fight but kept their survival hopes intact with a narrow 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, a result that leaves them two points behind West Ham and five adrift of Nottingham Forest.

The only goal of the match arrived eight minutes from full time, when Joao Palhinha got on the end of a Richarlison delivery to head home and secure three points for Roberto De Zerbi’s side. It was a hard-fought victory against opponents who, despite having already been confirmed as relegated and with nothing tangible left to play for, made life consistently difficult for the visitors throughout the 90 minutes.

Spurs had come into the fixture on the back of a 2-2 draw with Brighton the previous weekend and were in desperate need of a positive response. However, for much of the first half they struggled to impose themselves, dominating possession without creating clear-cut chances against a Wolves side that held its defensive shape and posed a threat on the counter.

The situation deteriorated further for Spurs when striker Dominic Solanke was forced off five minutes before the interval, a blow that disrupted whatever momentum the away side had managed to build. The teams went into the break level at 0-0.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Tottenham retaining the ball but lacking incision in the final third. Dutch winger Xavi Simons spurned the best opportunity of the half, skying his effort over the bar when well placed. He did not get another meaningful chance, as he was subsequently substituted with a suspected knee injury — adding to Spurs’ injury concerns at a critical stage of the season.

Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur also came close, only to be denied by a strong save from Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa, as Wolves continued to frustrate their opponents despite their already-settled fate.

Wolves manager Rob Edwards turned to Nigeria international Tolu Arokodare in search of an attacking spark, but the Super Eagles forward was unable to influence proceedings. Arokodare, who has managed just three goals in 27 appearances during what has been a difficult debut campaign at Molineux, offered little threat and failed to provide the home side with any meaningful forward presence.

Palhinha’s decisive header ultimately settled matters, with Spurs holding on despite late pressure from the hosts. The result means Tottenham remain rooted in the relegation zone but have closed the gap slightly on the teams immediately above them, with fixtures running out for all sides involved in the battle to retain top-flight status.

For Wolves, the defeat is largely inconsequential in terms of their league position, having already been relegated. Arokodare’s underwhelming season, however, raises questions about his future at the club and whether a return to form will be possible under new circumstances next term.
