  • There was a delightful moment in the Serie A on Saturday during the Inter Milan vs Fiorentina game
  • Luca Ranieri appeared to feign an injury to enable his muslim teammate break a fast
  • Fiorentina emerged 1-0 winners on the night thanks to a solitary goal from Giacomo Boneventura

The holy month of Ramadan is well underway, but that has not stopped muslim players from giving it their all on the football pitch.

This was evident in Serie A, where fans were treated to a delightful moment of compassion and respect.

It happened in the Serie A game involving Inter Milan and Fiorentina, where towards the end of the game happened to come around the time muslims are supposed to break their fast.

Italian defender Luca Ranieri was well aware of this fact, and he decided to do the honorable, yet unethical thing by football standards as he went down in an apparent injury towards the end of the game.

What was interesting was the fact that no one was near him at the time, although many would assume it was probably cramp.

Cameras then turned to midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who was seen taking in what looked like bananas to break his fast.

The Italian football federation does not require referees to pause the game at any given point in time for players to break their fast.

On social media, fans had varying reactions:

@RMAXemi said:

“Respect if that's true, but is it possible that the game is in injury time played a hand in his decision? Wouldn't be the first guy to fake an injury to waste time”

@GugsaChalla added:

“Instead of faking injuries, why don’t we just briefly stop the game so people can break their fast?”

@Kachi188 said:

"There should be ramadan breaks during fasts like this. Football is an exhausting sport.”

How the game went

As far as the game, only one goal separated the two sides at full time as Fiorentina claimed all three points thanks to Giacomo Boneventura’s strike early in the second half, as per ESPN.

Defeat leaves Inter in danger of slipping to fourth spot on the log as local rivals AC Milan could overtake them with a win over league leaders Napoli.
