The weekend of 18-20 April 2026 produced one of the most eventful stretches of the season for Super Eagles players based across Europe, with Nigerian internationals making headlines in Scotland, Spain, England, Germany, and Italy.
In Glasgow, Kelechi Iheanacho delivered the standout individual performance of the weekend. The veteran striker came off the bench in Celtic’s Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren and scored twice to help his side into the final. The clinical substitute appearance reinforced Celtic’s decision to bring him to Scotland and earned him widespread recognition as a decisive impact player at the business end of the campaign.
The weekend’s most painful story unfolded in Madrid, where Ademola Lookman scored in the Copa del Rey final only for Atletico Madrid to be eliminated by Real Sociedad in a penalty shootout. The Nigerian winger, who has developed a reputation for performing on the biggest occasions, was unable to prevent his side from falling at the final hurdle. Individual brilliance from Lookman was ultimately insufficient as Atletico exited the competition without silverware.
In the English Championship, Frank Onyeka and Coventry City secured promotion to the Premier League after earning a hard-fought draw against Blackburn Rovers. The result was enough to confirm top-flight football for Coventry next season. Ryan Alebiosu, who lined up for Blackburn in the same fixture, was arguably the standout player on the pitch despite finishing on the losing side, registering two chances created, two key passes, two big chances, and a perfect dribble completion rate.
Elsewhere in England, Ola Aina featured as Nottingham Forest defeated Burnley to move five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, a result that substantially strengthened their chances of top-flight survival. Josh Maja also scored for West Bromwich Albion in an away win at Preston North End, moving the Baggies five points clear of the Championship drop zone.
The one significant concern from England came at the Gtech Community Stadium, where Alex Iwobi was forced off in the 42nd minute of Fulham’s goalless draw against Brentford after pulling his hamstring. Calvin Bassey also featured for Fulham, while Samuel Chukwueze replaced the injured Iwobi. The full extent of Iwobi’s setback was not immediately clear and is expected to become apparent in the coming days.
In Germany, Nathan Tella produced a strong showing for Bayer Leverkusen, but his efforts were not enough to secure a result as Leverkusen suffered a late defeat to Augsburg. Nigerian forward Uchenna Ogundu was among those who impressed for the opposition.
In Serie A, Maduka Okoye came agonisingly close to recording his ninth clean sheet of the season for Udinese. Substitute Nesta Elphege ended that prospect by scoring a decisive winner within six minutes of coming on to hand Parma a 1-0 victory. The defeat was a harsh conclusion to what has otherwise been a strong defensive season for the Super Eagles goalkeeper.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru provided a more positive Italian note, coming off the bench to contribute as Lazio claimed a 2-0 away victory at Napoli — a result that keeps the Rome club’s European ambitions intact heading into the final weeks of the season.
