Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a stark assessment of his side’s Premier League title prospects, stating that a defeat at Chelsea this weekend would all but end any realistic chance of catching Arsenal at the top of the table.

City currently sit nine points behind Arsenal, though they hold two games in hand. Despite Arsenal suffering a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth — a result that offered City a glimmer of hope — Guardiola was unequivocal about the scale of the challenge still facing his squad heading into the trip to Stamford Bridge.

“If we don’t win in Stamford Bridge, and that’s not an easy place to go, maybe we don’t need to make the press conference before Arsenal, because it will be over,” Guardiola said. “Everybody knows it… there are so many games left, you have to win all of them. Not one draw, no, forget about it. Nine points is a lot of points against Arsenal.”

The City boss did not attempt to downplay Arsenal’s commanding position in the title race, instead acknowledging the Gunners’ remarkable consistency throughout the 2025-26 campaign. “The gap is big, I cannot deny it. Nine points, one game in hand, but you have to win it,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Guardiola also paid tribute to Arsenal’s overall quality, pointing to their unbeaten Champions League group stage record as evidence of just how formidable Mikel Arteta‘s side have become. “Arsenal… beating Arsenal once is wow. Imagine twice. In the Champions League they didn’t lose one game. The numbers and the way it’s consistent, solid… it’s top,” he added.

Reflecting on City’s own inconsistency this season, Guardiola acknowledged a departure from the standard that brought the club sustained domestic dominance in previous years. “In the past, always we found a way to win the games… this season, we didn’t find,” he admitted.

For City to overhaul Arsenal on goal difference and points, they would need to win every remaining fixture — a margin-for-error that Guardiola openly described as non-existent. The visit to Stamford Bridge represents perhaps the most consequential fixture remaining in their season, with Chelsea historically presenting a difficult proposition for visiting sides.

Mancheseter City have won the Premier League title six times under Guardiola since his arrival in 2016, including back-to-back triumphs in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons and a historic treble in 2022-23. However, their grip on domestic dominance has appeared less assured during the current campaign, with the club reportedly having already secured silverware in other competitions this term.

With the title race entering its final stretch, the outcome of City’s clash with Chelsea is likely to set the tone for the remainder of the season. Should City fail to win, Arsenal — who still have their own fixtures to navigate — would move closer to clinching what would be a significant Premier League title.
