Guardiola Praises Declan Rice’s Post-Match Rally Speech After Man City Beat Arsenal in Premier League Title Clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has offered rare praise for an opponent’s leadership, singling out Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice after the England international was seen rallying his teammates on the pitch following Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to City at the Etihad Stadium.

In the immediate aftermath of the defeat, Rice was spotted urging his Arsenal colleagues that the Premier League title race was “not done” — a moment Guardiola said he observed and found deeply telling about the club’s mentality.

“I love that. I love that. That’s why Arsenal is there,” Guardiola told Sky Sports. “I saw it [on Monday] and it shows what Declan Rice means. That’s the Arsenal mentality, we’ve faced it in the Premier League these [past] seasons and in the Carabao Cup, how competitive they are.”

The result left Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table reduced to just three points. City, with a game in hand against relegation-threatened Burnley, had the opportunity to draw level — and subsequently did so, leapfrogging Arsenal to the summit following their win over the Clarets, who were confirmed as relegated in the same fixture.

Guardiola acknowledged that Rice’s public show of resolve is not incidental to Arsenal’s broader campaign. The Gunners have remained unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League this season and have consistently challenged at the top of the Premier League throughout the year. “Otherwise they can’t have done the season they have done,” he said. “You have Mikel [Arteta] but also these type of players that follow the message. And in the bad moments, they have the resilience [to say] we are there, we are there. That is a good example for us what we’re going to face in the six games, five games [for them] in the title race.”

The comments underline the significance of what has become one of the most closely contested Premier League title races in recent memory. Arsenal are chasing their first league championship since 2004 — a drought spanning more than two decades — while Manchester City are pursuing a fifth domestic title in six years under Guardiola.

Rice, who joined Arsenal from West Ham United in the summer of 2023 in a deal reported at the time to be worth around £105 million, has established himself as a central figure in Arteta’s setup. His leadership qualities have been a talking point throughout the season, and Guardiola’s acknowledgement adds external weight to that assessment.

With both clubs entering the final stretch of the campaign, the title outcome remains unresolved. Arsenal face five remaining matches, while City have six. The margin between the two sides is now razor-thin, and any dropped points from either club could prove decisive in determining where the trophy ends up come the season’s close.
