Pep Guardiola has offered a candid assessment of Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes, admitting he would have no desire to face the Brazilian in a contest after watching him go toe-to-toe with Erling Haaland during Manchester City’s 2-1 Premier League win at the Etihad Stadium on 19 April 2026.
“I would not like to be Haaland and battle against Gabriel and Saliba. I prefer to read a book,” Guardiola said. “Definitely not. Dealing with those guys, how they do it, and he handled it. Really good.”
The Manchester City manager’s remarks came after one of the most closely watched individual battles of the Premier League season reached flashpoint in the 83rd minute, when Gabriel appeared to thrust his head into Haaland’s face following a prolonged grappling exchange that left the Norwegian striker’s undershirt torn. Despite widespread appeals from City players and a VAR review conducted by official John Brooks, referee Anthony Taylor issued only yellow cards to both players, a decision that drew significant controversy given the potential case for violent conduct.
Notwithstanding the heated exchange, Guardiola described the contest as tasteful, pointing to the quality of both combatants rather than the controversy surrounding them.
On the pitch, Haaland ultimately had the final say. The Norwegian scored the decisive goal, reacting quickest to Nico O’Reilly’s cut-back into the box to beat Gabriel to the ball and secure all three points for the hosts. The victory was City’s, but it was the margins of the title race that commanded the most attention at full-time.
The result has dramatically reshaped the Premier League standings. Arsenal, who had entered the match with a six-point cushion at the summit, now lead by just three points. Manchester City, sitting on 67 points, also hold a game in hand over Mikel Arteta’s side, meaning the momentum has shifted considerably in the defending champions’ favour as the season enters its closing stages.
For Arsenal, the defeat carries additional weight given the context surrounding their campaign. The Gunners are attempting to end a 22-year wait for the Premier League title — their last triumph came during the 2003/2004 season under Arsène Wenger, when they famously went unbeaten throughout the entire campaign. That pursuit has been complicated further by an injury-hit squad, with Arteta’s options stretched at a critical juncture.
Gabriel has been a central figure in Arsenal’s defensive structure throughout the season, forming a commanding centre-back partnership alongside William Saliba — the pairing Guardiola specifically referenced in his post-match comments. The Brazil international’s physicality and aerial presence have been among Arsenal’s most consistent assets, qualities that were on full display against one of the most prolific strikers in Premier League history.
Haaland, who has consistently posed problems for every defence he has faced since joining City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, was held largely in check before his decisive late contribution — a sequence that only added to Guardiola’s admiration for the Arsenal defender’s performance.
With the title race now reduced to a three-point margin and City holding games in hand, the remaining fixtures for both clubs will be subject to intense scrutiny. Arsenal’s ability to manage their injury situation while maintaining results could prove the defining factor in whether they can hold on, or whether City’s experience of winning consecutive titles ultimately proves decisive.
