Girona Hold Real Madrid to 1-1 Draw at Bernabéu, Handing Barcelona Six-Point LaLiga Lead

A Thomas Lemar equaliser cancelled out Federico Valverde's second-half opener as 12th-placed Girona frustrated Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, leaving Álvaro Arbeloa's side in serious danger of surrendering the LaLiga title to Barcelona.

Real Madrid’s LaLiga title defence suffered a significant setback on April 10, 2026, as Girona — sitting 12th in the table — claimed a 1-1 draw at the Bernabéu, extending a troubling run of dropped points for the Spanish giants.

Federico Valverde provided the breakthrough early in the second half, his trademark long-range effort swerving beyond Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to give the hosts what appeared to be a platform for three points. However, the advantage lasted only minutes. Thomas Lemar exploited defensive space in behind the Real Madrid backline to level matters in the 62nd minute, silencing the home crowd and completing a hard-earned point for the visitors.

Girona celebrated the result on social media, posting on X: “SUMEM UN PUNT AL BERNABÉU!” — reflecting the significance of holding one of Europe’s most decorated clubs on their own turf.

Despite the presence of Jude Bellingham — making his first start since January — Real Madrid were unable to impose consistent rhythm on the match. Kylian Mbappé, one of the side’s primary creative outlets, was largely kept quiet throughout the contest. A late penalty appeal from the French forward was dismissed by the referee, compounding his frustration on an evening when neither he nor Vinícius Júnior were able to influence the outcome in the ways their manager would have hoped.

The draw compounds what has become a difficult stretch for Real Madrid. Defeats to Mallorca and Bayern Munich had already damaged their domestic and European ambitions prior to this result. With those setbacks now followed by a home stalemate against a mid-table opponent, the mood around the club is notably subdued.

In terms of the title race, the implications are stark. Real Madrid now trail Barcelona by six points, with the Catalans also holding a game in hand. Should Barcelona win that outstanding fixture, the gap would extend to nine points — a deficit that would be extremely difficult to overturn in the remaining weeks of the season. For context, a nine-point gap with a game in hand at this stage of a LaLiga campaign has historically proven insurmountable for the trailing side.

Álvaro Arbeloa, who took charge of the senior squad following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure, faces mounting pressure to stabilise results as the season enters its final phase. The combination of Champions League commitments and this domestic wobble has raised questions about the squad’s depth and cohesion during a congested fixture schedule.

Barcelona, meanwhile, will be aware that their rivals’ inconsistency has handed them a significant opportunity to secure a LaLiga title. The Catalan club’s own form and their pending game in hand will be closely watched in the coming days as the destination of the 2025-26 Spanish top-flight championship comes into sharper focus.
