Inaki Williams has explained his decision to play for Ghana was from a mature point of view and he did not want to let the opportunity of having an international career slip away.

The Athletic Club star was born in Spain and represented La Roja at senior level, but decided to switch nationalities and play for the country of his parents in June.

Williams, who could play for the Black Stars at the World Cup in Qatar, says choosing Ghana comes with more benefits for his career.

"It's something I've been thinking about for many months and I've had the help of my family," Williams said as quoted by Marca.

"The president of the Ghanaian federation is the one who pushed hardest for me to be there.

"Trains only run once and I got on this one, which has more good than bad.

"The decision has been mature and consensual with my family."

Inaki Williams featured for Athletic Bilbao in their opening day draw against Mallorca in La Liga on Monday evening.

The striker is hoping for a good campaign as he justifies his decision to represent the Black Stars of Ghana.

The 27-year-old forward paid a visit to Ghana during the post-season holidays last month and took the opportunity to hold talks with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) about a possible switch of nationality.

Initial reports suggested that Williams, who visited Ghana with his younger sibling Nico Williams, had turned down the opportunity to represent the four-time African champions.
