  • Bayern Munich's Sadio Mane will challenge Premier League stars Riyad Mahrez and Mohamed Salah for the 2022 CAF Player of the Year award
  • The list released by CAF includes 30 players from 13 countries who are contending to sit on the throne of African football
  • Interestingly, Arsenal & Ghana star Thomas Partey was snubbed by the African football governing body

Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez headline the Confederation of African Football's 30-man list for the African Player of the Year award.

The list also includes Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly and Nantes & Nigerian winger Moses Simon.

However, there was no Ghanaian footballer nominated for the prestigious award, with Arsenal star Thomas Partey and Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey missing out on the roster released by the continental football governing body.

The absence of Ghanaian players could perhaps be as a results of the Black Stars' abysmal performance in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which cost coach Milovan Rajevac his job.

The Black Stars exited the tournament at the bottom of Group C where they failed to record a win in three games.

Current African champions Senegal have the highest number of nominations, with five players.

North African giants Morocco follows with four nominations, while Mali, Burkina Faso and Cameroon have three nominations each.

Newly-signed Bayern Munich forward Mane is considered the heavy favourite for the award after leading Senegal to the AFCON title in February and also reaching the UEFA Champions League final with Liverpool.

The CAF Awards 2022 will be held on 21 July 2022 in Rabat, Morocco.

The last time the awards was held was in 2019 with Mane and Asisat Oshoala winning the men and women categories respectively.

CAF considers postponing AFCON 2023

Sports Brief earlier reported that CAF could postpone next year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast next year.

Stunning reports have it that the continental football body might postpone the African showpiece which has been scheduled for June 23 to July 23, 2023, in Ivory Coast.

It is exactly a year before the commencement of the competition and major cities in Ivory Coast are witnessing floods due to heavy rains.
