  • Legendary Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan has called for players who played the qualifiers to be included in the final squad for the World Cup
  • The former Ghana captain believes it is unfair to drop players who were actively involved in the qualifiers for tournaments
  • Certain players have been linked to the Black Stars following Ghana's qualification to the 2022 World Cup

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan says players should be “treated fairly” following reports that Ghana is seeking to recruit new players for the 2022 World Cup.

According to the former Sunderland forward, players who played for the Black Stars during qualifiers show earn call-ups in the official team for the World Cup.

The Ghana Football Association has been in talks with certain players in an attempt to convince them to play for the Black Stars following Ghana's qualification to the Mundial.

The likes of Southampton's Mohammed Salisu, Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea and Bristol City's Antoine Semenyo have been named to switch nationality and play for the Black Stars.

And Gyan, who captained Ghana between 2013 and 2019, has said that any new player selected must prove that they are better than the ones already in the squad.

In an interview with Asaase Radio, via Citi Sports, Gyan said:

“No player would like to be [left out] especially having played all the games. When these players come, they don’t even play one game.
They just sit on the bench, get their bonuses and go, they don’t compete. If they bring these players, they have to show us something, they have to prove to people that they deserve to get into the team, that’s all aIl want. We all want the national team to be better.”

Gyan added that his elder brother, Baffour Gyan, lost interest in playing for Ghana after he was dropped for the 2006 World Cup despite playing active role during the qualifiers.

“It happened to my brother. In 2006, he played 90% of the qualifiers and then they brought strikers who had never tasted one game. He was on standby.
That was when my brother gave up on football. He doesn’t follow football, he doesn’t watch it, he doesn’t like it, he’s purely a businessman. Sometimes people have to be treated fairly,” Asamoah Gyan said.

The 22-year-old Arsenal forward has represented England at youth levels, and remains the all-time leading scorer for the U21, but he is ready to play for the Black Stars.

In an interview with the Beautiful Game Podcast, Nketiah revealed he is opened to talks with the Ghana Football Association.
