  • Andre Ayew has admitted he would have done exactly what Luis Suarez did in 2010 if he was found in a similar situation while playing for Ghana
  • The then Ajax forward dashed Ghana's semifinal dreams when he handled a goal-bound effort from Dominic Adiyiah
  • Ayew and the Black Stars will have the opportunity to exact revenge against Suarez when Ghana cross swords with Uruguay at the 2022 World Cup

Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has disclosed he would have repeated Luis Suarez's handball incident in 2010 if he was in an identical situation for Ghana.

Luis Suarez became Ghana and to a large extent Africa's No.1 enemy when he denied a goal-bound effort in the dying embers of a quarterfinal clash between Ghana and Uruguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The former Liverpool and FC Barcelona striker was given his marching for denying an obvious goal but the resulting penalty was missed by the ever-reliable Asamoah Gyan - his first penalty miss after scoring twice from the spot in the same tournament.

Ghana will eventually lose on penalty shootouts and painfully miss out on becoming the first nation from Africa to reach the last four at the global showpiece.

12 years after the incident, Ghana has been pitted with Suarez's Uruguay in Group H of the upcoming Mundial and many football lovers have dubbed the clash as a game for revenge.

But taking a journey down memory lane, Ayew, who was part of Ghana's squad that suffered heartbreak against Uruguay in 2010, reckons although Suarez appears to be the villain he will not hesitate to duplicate his action if he is found in a similar situation while playing for Ghana.

“Like I said before and I said in the past that maybe if it was me or someone else, I could have done the same on the action,” the Al Sadd forward said when asked about Suarez’s action." He told Joy News.
Ayew continued: “It’s true he killed us, he killed our dream, he killed Africans’ dream, and we all have that feeling that he didn’t make us the first [African] country to get to the semifinals, so that will always be there.
“But he did it for his nation, he took a decision but we don’t look at that, we want to play well and try and succeed.”

Asamoah Gyan reveals he had wanted to punch Suarez after 2010 World Cup incident

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana's all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan has confessed he nearly punched Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez after the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The enigmatic Suarez stood between the Black Stars and a semifinal berth at the global showpiece with the former FC Barcelona striker handling a goal-bound effort from Dominic Adiyiah in the dying embers of a quarterfinal clash between Ghana and Uruguay.

Suarez's handball led to a dismissal with Ghana handed a penalty; however the resulting penalty was missed by the usually efficient Asamoah Gyan, who had previously scored two spot-kicks in the tournament.
