Legendary Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has rued not taking part in the penalty shootout during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals against Cote d'Ivoire.

Ghana lost to their West African neighbours on penalties after neither team could manage to score a goal throughout the game.

The penalty shooutout, which lasted 11 rounds, ended when Cote d'Ivoire goalkeeper Boubacar Barry converted his kick after saving a penalty from Ghana goalie Razak Brimah.

The Black Stars converted their first two kicks whiles the Elephants missed their first two, but Herve Renard's men won the shootout 9-8.

And Gyan who was substituted in the final; has revealed his biggest regret was not taking part in the penalty kicks after calling for a change.

“As captain, I’ll say it was in 2015 [AFCON] when I asked to be substituted against Ivory Coast in the final,” he said on Peace FM as quoted by FootballGhana.

“I feel like if I was not substituted, I could’ve helped in the penalty shootout. But due to some things that were going on, I felt I needed to give the chance to another player.

“This was because I had excused myself from taking penalties. But there were a lot of things going on which led to me asking to be substituted. So, I say that was one of my biggest regrets as a captain.”
