  • Asamoah Gyan has opened up on the saddest day of his football career playing for the Black Stars of Ghana
  • Gyan missed a penalty in the quarter finals of the World Cup in 2010 which prevented Ghana from reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup
  • Ghana have drawn Uruguay in Group H of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year, twelve years after Suarez's goal-bound handball

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan remains haunted by his penalty miss in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup against Uruguay in 2010.

The Black Stars all-time leading scorer prevented Ghana from reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup after missing from the spot following Luiz Suarez's goal-bound handball.

Asamoa Gyan, who will be launching his maiden memoir at the end of April, disclosed in an earlier interview how is still haunted by the miss.

"Before the penalty I said to myself, 'This is it. I will put this in, do my dance, and make everyone happy.' I knew everyone had confidence in me, and I knew myself that I was going to score, because my record with penalty kicks was excellent. I had already scored two in the World Cup. Everyone was already celebrating," said Gyan as quoted by the Independent.
"I was going to place the ball to the goalkeeper's right," Gyan continues, "but then I saw his movement, also to the right, so I hit it straight, and it hit the crossbar. It was the saddest moment, not for me alone but for the whole of Africa."

The West African country have kept their grudge against Suarez, formerly of Liverpool, and believe the 2022 World Cup present an opportunity to revenge the agonizing defeat.
