Ghana has finally be given the green light to use the Baba Yara stadium as the venue for the first leg of their World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

The Cape Coast stadium was rejected after the inspection team from CAF deemed it unfit to host the Super Eagles.

However, the news of the Baba Yara stadium being approved for the Nigeria game has been received with excitement by Ghanaians, but their rivals panicked following the decision.

The last World Cup play-off game by the Black Stars at the Baba Yara Stadium ended with the Ghana trouncing Egypt 6-1 to qualify for the competition in Brazil in 2014.

Kumasi is the second largest city in the West African nation, and football is like a religion for the people of Ashanti Region.

The Black Stars have enjoyed good times at the Baba Yara, recording famous results, including the 5-0 thrashing of Ethiopia and the 6-1 mauling of the Pharaohs.

How Ghana beat Egypt 6-1 at the Baba Yara stadium

On October 15, 2013, Ghana welcomed Egypt at the Baba Yara stadium for the first leg of their World Cup play off in Kumasi.

The Black Stars wasted no time in taking the lead after Asamoah Gyan scored just five minutes into the game before Egypt defender netted an own goal to make it 2-0. Mohamed Aboutrika pulled one back from the spot but Majeed Waris restored the two goal lead before half time.

It was all Ghana in the second half, with now Hearts of Oak player Sulley Muntari, Christian Atsu and Majeed Waris all on the scoresheet as Ghana won 6-1.

The game was done an dusted in Kumasi before the team travelled to Egypt for the second leg.

Baba Yara to host Ghana versus Nigeria World Cup playoff

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has approved the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host the first instalment of the all-important tie between Ghana and Nigeria, reports the Ghana Football Association.

The acceptance of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium comes after a CAF Licensing Inspector visited the edifice in Kumasi last Sunday to inspect the facility for the purposes of the fixture.

The contest was originally planned to be held at the Cape Coast Stadium - which had hosted all of Ghana’s previous qualifiers.
