  • The Black Stars spent three weeks in the Asian country before the tournament in Cameroon last month
  • Ghana endured its worst Nations Cup after getting eliminated at the group stages following a final group game defeat to Comoros

Spokesperson of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum, has opened up on the decision to camp in Qatar before the Nations Cup in Cameroon.

The FA took the Black Stars to Doha for a three week training camp before emplaning to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations two days to the start of the competition.

And according to Henry Asante, who was speaking on Starr FM, the reason for camping in Doha was to get good friendly games.

"We chose Qatar for training because before the AFCON, 7 African countries were going to camp in Qatar . And some of the friendly match offers we got, the teams were based there," he said.
"Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia playing in the Fifa Arab cup were to remain there. We camped there to have access to top quality friendly matches and save cost," he added.

The Black Stars ended up playing only Algeria in a friendly after their first two scheduled matches were canceled.

Ghana had a disastrous Africa Cup of Nations after getting eliminated from the group stages for failing to win a single game.

This had led strong criticisms from the general public in Ghana with many describing their Qatar camping as useless.

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif reveals reason for camping in Doha

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that the Minister of Youth and Sports in Ghana, Mustapha Ussif, has revealed that the Black Stars team were camped in Doha to acclimatize with the weather before AFCON 2021.

The Black Stars spent three weeks in the Asian country before leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but failed to progress beyond the group stages.

The Minister, who was speaking on the floor of parliament following the team's performance in Cameroon, said part of the reason for being in Doha was because the World Cup will be hosted in Qatar.
